Ocean economy

South Africa's vast ocean space and approximately 3 924 kilometres of coastline highlight the relatively unexplored economic potential of the "Ocean Economy". In 2010, the oceans contributed approximately R54 billion to the economy and accounted for about 316 000 jobs. To tap into this sector, Government has launched the "Operation Phakisa" which identified five priority areas to focus on:

  • Aquaculture
  • Offshore oil and gas
  • Marine protection and gas
  • Marine manufacturing
  • Marine transport
