Over 50 companies manned stalls at an impressive Buffalo City Metro (BCM) Franchise Expo at the International Convention Centre on the beachfront on 13 – 14 November.
This was the second such expo after 2014 and stallholders virtually quadrupled from 2014’s inaugural event when only 13 stalls opened.
However, this year things were entirely different with 53 companies, many of them top brands in South Africa, running stalls. Franchises did not have to pay for the stalls and hundreds of interested people attended the two-day expo.
The expo was run to attract new investors of the varied business franchises on offer and encourage entrepreneurs to invest in East London. There are huge benefits available for investors, which in turn will beef up the economy in the city.
The Franchise Association of SA stated that franchises contribute over R300-billion to the country’s gross domestic product, and figures prove that franchise businesses have a much better chance of succeeding, with the backing of the franchise, than ordinary businesses.
Among the franchises exhibited this year were such diverse businesses as pie manufacturers, a top brand restaurant, a paving company, an air conditioning and engineering business, a renewable energy business, an aluminium window and door manufacturer, a painting and maintenance firm, an ink supplier, a motor vehicle service company and even a business that sells fried chips.
Many of the stallholders were pleasantly surprised at the reception they received in East London.
There is no doubt that the 2016 expo will be bigger and better than the one this year. – Peter Martin
